The Cosquer cave, located near Marseille, France is a submerged cave system, accessible through a 175 m long tunnel situated 37 m under sea level. Discovered in 1985 by diver Henri Cosquer, the cave contains hundreds of engravings and parietal paintings dating from two different paleolithic occupations, one around 27 000 BP and the next around 19 000 BP. During the Paleolithic, sea level was 100 m below the cave entrance and the shore of the Mediterranean was several kilometers south.
